How to Make Herb Candles

Food smells delicious when it is being prepared and cooked but once the meal is over, the smells are not so attractive. Burn one of these herbal candles to help remove any unpleasant aromas and make your kitchen fresh again.

                                                         What you'll need
  • 250ml or 290g soya container wax
  • A pre-tabbed, waxed wick
  • 1 teaspoon lemongrass essential oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Rosemary essential oil
  • Green colour
  • Empty spice jars or jam jars
  • This recipe will make approximately two candles using spice jars
 Ingredients available at www.SoapCafeMalta.com

To make the candles, both your room and the containers should be at approximately 21ºC (70ºF); you can gently heat the jars in hot water or heat them with a hairdryer if they are really cold. The temperature difference between the wax and the jar should be as little as possible so that the wax adheres well to the sides of the jar.

Method
1) Take a pre-tabbed, waxed/primed wick and dab a piece of wax glue, a glue dot, or hot glue from a gun onto the base of the metal tab. Affix to the bottom of the jar.

2) Make sure that you place the wick exactly in the centre of the jar otherwise the candle will burn unevenly. If the jar is a little deep for your hand to fully reach in to secure the wick tab, use a chopstick or end of a wooden spoon to press it into place.

3) Heat the wax to the melting temperature of 68°C (87°C if using powder dye) and add the green colour a little at a time.

4) Stir thoroughly until it is dissolved. Melted candle wax always looks darker than set wax.

5) Add the essential oils and stir thoroughly into the melted wax. Essential oils should always be added last to prevent evaporation and losing any of their therapeutic properties.

 6) With colour and essential oils mixed through, pour the wax into the jars at between 51°C and 68°C. Leave to set and "cure" for 48 hours before burning.

TIP - Burning a candle while peeling and chopping onions will help prevent you from crying.

This project is inspired from the book Candles, by Elaine Stavert, GMC Publications.

  1. Very interesting post... do you also stock the soya container wax and waxed wicks in your shop?

  2. Hi Patz,

You can find wax, wicks and essential oils on my website: www.SoapCafeMalta.com . (Under DIY Supplies)

You can order them through the site and i can either post them to you or you can pick them up from the shop.

Due to lack of space,we are unable to stock everything at the shop, hence why i told you to pre order them online.

  3. Hi,

Thank you so much for this post, I was afraid I was doomed to buy candle making starter kits etc. I had a question though: I am interested in taking fresh rosemary (or dry it out) and place into the wax in the jar. When the candle burns, will it burn the rosemary? I haven't seen anything like that before and that is why I am asking. I would truly appreciate your insight.

    Thanks
