Kaolin Clay (White Clay)

White Kaolin Clay is found in virtually all powdered and dry cosmetics and most wet cosmetics.

Its natural adsorbent properties makes it essential in hygiene products and is often found in soaps, scrubs, poultices, deodorants, facial powders and masks. It is the mildest of all clays and is suitable to add to products created for people with sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it. It does not draw oils from the skin, so it can also be used on dry skin types without negative results.

Kaolin Clay is high in calcium, silica, zinc and magnesium, which are beneficial for oily, blemished skin. The clay's mildly drying and disinfectant properties help heal existing blemishes and inflammations, while preventing new ones from forming.

Traditionally, clays are used to reduce swelling and inflammation, and to draw impurities from the skin. Cosmetic clays are made up of different mineral contents, and each clay type has a different effect on the skin. The high mineral content of White Kaolin Clay rejuvenates the skin while the clay exfoliates and stimulates blood circulation to the skin. Regular use of clay facials will remove dead skin cells, improve circulation to the skin, remove debris from the pores and bring about a smooth healthy glow.

Cosmetics in Ancient Egypt

These pages are edited by Prof. Hamed Abdel-reheem Ead, Professor of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science -University of Cairo, Giza, Egypt and director of the Science Heritage Center

Cosmetics in Ancient Egypt

Cosmetics are as old as vanity. In Egypt their use can be traced back almost to the earlist period of which burials have been found, and continues to the present day.
Cleanliness and personal appearance were highly regarded by the ancient Egyptians. For the priests in the service of the gods cleanliness was strictly prescribed. Not only did they have to wash several times a day, but they also had to be clean shaven all over, to keep at bay parasites, such as lice, eggs of which have been found in the hair of mummies. Water was plentiful, but there is little evidence that the ancient Egyptians used natural soaps or tooth powder. In a hot climate deodorants were much in demand. To repel body odour men and women alike were advised to rub pellets of ground carob(?) into the skin, or to place little balls of incense and porridge where limbs met.

Around 1400 BC three ladies of the court of Tuthmosis III were buried with costly royal funerary equipment, which included cosmetics. Two of the jars contained a cleansing cream made of oil and lime. Some prescriptions for body 'scrub' are given in the medical papyri

The 'red natron' was presumably natron tinted by an iron compound in the earth where the natron was extracted.

A lady wiping her face. Relief of unknown provenance; 11th Dynasty

(British Museum, 1658)

An allegedly successful remedy to treat wrinkles consisted of': gum of frankincense, wax, fresh moringa oil and cyperus grass; grounded finely and mixed with fermented plant juice applied daily.
A simple remedy of gum applied to the face after cleansing had a similar effect. If' the skin was marred by scars caused by burning, a special ointment was used to treat them and make them less obvious, as for example red ochre and kohl, ground and mixed with sycamore juice. An alternative treatment was a bandage of carob(?) and honey, or an ointment made of frankincense and honey.

Because of  their healthy diet and the lack of sugar the Egyptians did not suffer from tooth decay, but their bread contained particles of sand from the grain and grit from the grinding stone, which caused their teeth to become excessively worn. No evidence has been recovered to suggest that the Egyptians used a toothbrush in the manner of the miswak, a natural brush-cum-toothpaste from Salvadora persica, a tree native to southern Egypt and the Sudan. The root has been used for dental care by the Muslims since the days of the Prophet (PPUH). To improve on their breath the Egyptians chewed herbs, or they gargled with milk. Perhaps they also chewed frankincense like their descendants in the last century

As in other civilizations, the appearance of the hair was of paramount importance not only because of the visual effect, but also because of  the erotic symbolism conventionally conneted with hair. Men and women alike wore wigs made of human hair on festive occasions, but they also tried to keep their natural hair in good condition. Jars of what could be compared with 'setting lotion' have been found to contain a mixture of beeswax and resin. These were remedies for problems such as baldness and greying hair. To treat the latter, blood of a black ox or calf was boiled in oil to transfer the blackness of the animal to the greying hair, or the black horn of a gazelle was made into an unguent with oil to prevent grey hairs from appearing. These remedies are slightly more agreeable than another consisting of putrid donkey's liver steeped in oil, though they all had the same magic effect. A far more efficient remedy would be an ointment made of juniper berries and two unidentified plants kneaded into a paste with oil and heated. The natural colouring matter in the plants would rub off on the hair, and the astringent properties of juniper stimulate the scalp. In order to make the hair grow, chopped lettuce was placed on a bald patch, if the baldness occurred after an illness, or the head was anointed with equal parts of fir oil and another oil or fat.

The toilet casket of any man or woman would contain a razor for removing body hair, although a number of creams were sometimes used for the purpose. One such consisted of the boiled and crushed bones of a bird, mixed with fly dung, oil, sycamore juice, gum, and cucumber; this mixture would be heated and applied, presumably to be pulled off when cold, with the hair adhering to it.

The almond shape of the black Egyptian eyes was underlined by the application of black kohl or green malachite. Eyepaint was also considered as a treatment to cure or prevent eye diseases. A great number of prescriptions deal with preventing ingrowing eyelashes.
To cool the eyes a finely ground green mineral (jasper or serpentine) mixed with water was applied to the lids. Alternative preparations were ground carob(?) and fermented honey, or emmer grains steeped in water overnight. An eye wash was prepared from ground celery and hemp.

It was believed that eye make-up could ward off evil spirits and improve the sight. Even the poor wore eye make-up in ancient Egypt. The production of cosmetics during ancient Rome was usually done by female slaves called Cosmetae.

Eyepaint for an overnight treatment made of kohl and goose fat or a paste was mixed from kohl, green eyepaint, lapis lazuli, honey and ochre in equal parts, applied to the lids. The green eyepaint was usually malachite, a green ore of copper; kohl was made of galena, a dark grey ore of lead. It w as kept in lumps in little bags of linen or leather and was ground on a palette to a fine powder. The powder was poured into vases or tube-shaped containers from which it was extracted with a thin stick. It was applied either with the moistened stick, as is done by Egyptian women today, or, for medicinal purposes as quoted above, mixed with some fatty matter.

Malachite was brought to the Nile Valley from the mountainous regions of Sinai, whereas galena was obtained either near Aswan in Upper Egypt or at the Red Sea coast. But both were also imported as luxury commodities from Asia and Arabia. However, no matter which remedy was employed, the Egyptians knew that nothing made the eyes brighter than falling in love: 'Like eyepaint is my desire. When I see you, it makes my eyes sparkle', says a girl in a love poem.

Some Egyptians appear to have dyed their fingernails, but the nature of the red colour used is unknown. It may have been henna. Red was also required to paint the lips. The lip gloss, possibly made of fat with red ochre or with one of the plants used for dyeing, was applied with a brush or spatula. Red colour was used to give glow to the cheeks. A rouge consisting of red ochre and fiat, possibly with a little gull resin, has survived: it was some four thousand years old. Rouge in the form of powder was marketed a few years ago as a product of ancient Egyptian origin. The recipe which inspired the manufacturers was presumably one of those used for the purpose of camouflaging a burn.

Hemp powder

This is one of the most potent foods available, supporting optimal health and well being, for life. Raw hemp provides a broad spectrum of health benefits, including: weight loss, increased and sustained energy, rapid recovery from disease or injury, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, reduced inflammation, improvement in circulation and immune system as well as natural blood sugar control.

Heart Health and Lowered Blood Pressure:
Premature health failure may first appear as high blood pressure - a sign that the heart is over worked, required to force blood through too many miles of sluggish blood vessels.

Improved Digestion:
There are no known allergies to Hemp and they are of special benefit to those who are unable to eat gluten, lactose, sugar, fish, nuts, meat and other common foods. Combined with high fibre grains, fruits and vegetables in the diet, expect regular bowel movements synchronized with the frequency of meals - a sign of a naturally health bowel.

Losing Weight Naturally:
By taking Hemp as directed, expect to be hunger free until mid-afternoon. Expect reduced cravings for foods with stimulants, sugars, starches and saturated fats.

Healthy Cholesterol Levels:
Premature health failure appear as high cholesterol - a sign that veins and arteries have lost their elasticity as a result of an imperfect diet. Hemp are not only cholesterol free, but contain the optimum ratio of the polyunsaturated essential fatty acids, Omega 3 and 6 - hemp oil contains 57% linoleic (LA) and 19% linolenic (LNA) acids. When added to the diet, in a whole, natural and a cold processed food, like Hemp, improves cholesterol profiles. Hemp oil also contains some GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) that is absent from the fats we normally eat, but considered to be beneficial to health by nutritional experts.

A Natural Way to Control Blood Sugars:
Premature health failure may also appear as Type II diabetes - a sign that relevant organs are no longer capable of processing the sweet and starchy foods that are too often consumed.

The first steps in naturally balancing blood sugars is to introduce a high quality lean protein in your diet - the glucagon released when you eat protein helps keep insulin in check, then incorporate essential fatty acids, both found in Hemp. By avoiding refined carbohydrates - sugars and starches, in favour of high fibre vegetable and whole grain foods, our customers naturally control their blood sugar levels. Diabetics especially, report that circulation improves, often to the extent that they no longer fear losing their feet.

Spirulina

Spirulina is the ultimate natural nutritional supplement. It contains the most complete source of nutrients found in any single food. Spirulina typically contains over 65% protein, more than any other food including meat and fish. Proteins are necessary for maintaining tissues, sustaining growth and making hormones in the body. Spirulina contains the eight essential and 10 other amino acids and a greater concentration of vitamins and nutrients than any other natural food. Just 3 to 10 grams of Spirulina a day gives impressive amounts of beta carotene, B complex vitamins, Vitamin E, essential trace minerals and gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Spirulina is also a major source of iron and calcium...and not only!... Spirulina can also be used as the ultimate DIY, 'MIRACLE', BEAUTY PRODUCT... read more below...

Detox
Our bodies are constantly subjected to an onslaught of toxic chemicals from the air, water, food and drugs and need to continually eliminate these toxins. It has long been known that spirulina accelerates detoxification especially during fasting as spirulina has a unique combination of phytonutrients that can help cleanse our bodies.

Immune Booster
Spirulina is a powerful tonic for the immune system. Research and experience indicate that spirulina is an immune regulating food. Small amounts can help balance and stabilise the immune system, freeing up more of our metabolic energy for vitality, healing and assimilation of nutrients.

Diabetes
Spirulina is an ideal nutritional food for diabetes patients because of its high content of protein and vitamins and low content of carbohydrate. Furthermore, GLA, zinc and magnesium in spirulina can promote the synthesization of natural insulin.

Athletes
Spirulina is a superfood suited to a high intensity workout. Taken before exercise it delivers energy and improves stamina. Spirulina also helps to create and repair muscle and retain iron in the body. It is beneficial to hillwalkers, mountain climbers and marathon runners as it improves endurance and reduces cramp.

Anaemia
Iron is the most common mineral deficiency worldwide. Iron anaemia is prevalent in women, children, older people and especially women on weight-loss diets. Iron is essential for healthy red blood cells and a strong immune system, but typical iron supplements are not well absorbed by the human body.

Dysmenorrhea
GLA in spirulina can improve premenstrual symptom complex, such as headache, anxiety, oppression, etc.

Anti-Aging
Many people are aware of the value of food supplements for an aging population. It is well known that the antioxidants Vitamins C, E and beta carotene attack free radicals that roam throughout the body wreaking havoc on cells and organs increasing the aging effect and the risk of cancer. Anti-aging foods such as spirulina are ideal for older people who do not eat much, eat inappropriately or cannot absorb enough nutrients.

Wound healing
People use spirulina in face and body creams and body wraps. The Kanembu people in Chad use freshly harvested algae as a skin poultice for treating certain diseases. In France it has been found that pharmaceutical compounds containing spirulina accelerated wound healing. In Japan it has been shown that cosmetic products containing spirulina promoted skin metabolism and reduced scars.

Using OLIVE oil as your daily beauty product

Olive Oil can be used for many different beauty recipes and natural remedies. It goes on your skin easily and naturally without leaving a greasy feeling after it is applied. The skin absorbs it readily and has no allergic properties. Olive oil nourishes the skin leaving it soft and supple. It is rich in Vitamin E and has wonderful healing properties, perfect for dry, cracked or chapped skin.

Here are some ideas to use olive oil in your beauty care regimen.

Gentle Eye Makeup Remover
Olive oil is excellent for removing mascara, even better than petroleum jelly or baby oil and will be beneficial to the skin around your eyes. Just apply a few drops of oil onto a cotton wool and apply onto eye area. People with dry, dehydrated or mature skin will highly benefit from such a treatment.

Nourishing Clay Mask Shelf life: Use immediately
This particular recipe uses Kaolin as it is a 'gentle' cleansing clay which ideal also for dry skin types. The olive oil gives it extra nourishing properties and elasticity to mature skin due to it's high content of Vitamin E. (If you suffer from dehydrated skin, we recommend to add a couple of drops of glycerin to the following recipe as it acts as a humactant, thus attracting moisture to the skin)

Ingredients:
Mix 2 tablespoons of Kaolin
1 tablespoon of olive oil
Add a few drops of Rose water to create a smooth consistency
Apply to the face, being especially gentle around the eyes
Leave on for 15-20 minutes

Rinse off and apply your moisturizer.

Healing Lip Balm Shelf life: Use within 3 weeks
Beeswax and olive oil melted and poured into a small tin makes wonderful lip balm that will keep your lips soft and smooth. Here's one of my favorite recipes.

Ingredients
1 teaspoon of olive oil
1 teaspoon of calendula oil
1 teaspoon of beeswax
3 drops orange essential oil

Preparation
Melt the beeswax and add olive and calendula oils
Stir the whole time so the mass is consistent
Remove from heat, keep stirring and let it cool down a bit
Add the oil of choice and stir a bit more
Pour in a plastic container or jar and store properly

Softening Lip Scrub Shelf life: Use within 1 week
For soft , flake free lips, mix 1/2 teaspoon of unrefined brown sugar to 1 small teaspoon to olive oil. Rub gently in circular motion onto lip and surrounding area. (We do NOT recommend salt as a substitute as it is too harsh for the lip and face area).

Anti-Cellulite Body Scrub Shelf life: Use within 2 weeks
Scrubs are renowned to improve circulation and even the appearance of the 'orange peel' effect. We highly recommend using olive oil as the base oil as it penetrates deeply into the skin, thus the cellulite busting essential oils mentioned in this recipe, will 'travel' much faster into the problem area thus one can see faster results.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup of green tea
1/2 cup of sea salt or sugar
1/2 cup of olive oil
2 drops of black pepper essential oil
3 drops of grapefruit essential oil
3 drops peppermint essential oil

Preparation:
Mix all the ingredients together. While taking a shower, scoop up some, not more than a teaspoon at a time, and gently, in circular motion distribute the scrub. Rinse well and pat dry.

Sore or Tired Legs and Feet Shelf life: Use within 3 weeks
Combine the following ingredients and apply as a moisturizer with upward strokes before going to bed. For best results we recommend to raise your feet with the help of a pillow when lying down in bed.

1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon of Aloe Vera
1 teaspoon of Wheat Germ Oil
8  drops of Peppermint Oil
5 drops of Eucalyptus Oil
5 drops of Lavender Oil

Antiseptic Foot Soak Shelf life: Use immediately
The moisturizing properties of olive oil make it a popular ingredient in natural foot soak recipes while the bicarbonate of soda and the following essential oils deodorize the feet while also being help treat conditions such as athletes foot.

Combine the following ingredients in a small bowl:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup of lemon juice
3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup of bicarbonate of soda
3 drops peppermint essential oil
3 drops of tea tree essential oil
3 drops of Lemongrass essential oil

Add to one gallon of warm water and enjoy this wonderful olive oil beauty foot soak!

What are Floral waters/ Hydrosols?

Flower water and floral water are descriptive, but now outdated terms, used to describe the condensate water that remains after the extraction of an essential oil by water or steam distillation. When essential oils are produced this way, not all of the aromatic and healing principles held within the plant are actually captured in the essential oil.

Certain components are hydrophilic, which means they dissolve into water, and this produces what is variously known as a flower water, hydrosol or hydrolate. What ever you choose to call it, the resulting fragrant water contains the very essence of everything that was contained within the plant when it was still alive and growing.

Steam Distillation

What's in a name?

The terms flower or floral waters are misleading since these miracle waters can be produced from herbs, needles, leaves, woods, barks and seeds. In aromatherapy, these products are more commonly referred to as hydrosols.

Unfortunately today, many 'flower waters' are made from synthetic compounds which smell quite pretty but posses absolutely no healing properties! In fact, quite the opposite - they can cause skin irritation.

Others are produced by adding essential oils or absolutes to water by using alcohol or some other type of dispersant or solvent. This may appear to be perfectly acceptable, since the finished product contains essential oil and has a pleasant fragrance similar to a natural hydrosol.

However, this type of reconstituted product lacks the wealth of vital healing properties present in a true hydrosol, - remember, many of the plant constituents were dissolved into the water whilst extracting the oil, so they were never present in the essential oil in the first place!

Therefore adding an essential oil to water will never create a product with the same range of healing benefits as a true hydrosol. There is simply no substitute for a true hydrosol, so don't let anybody try and fool you.

Aroma-therapeutic uses

Hydrosols are highly versatile and can be used for personal care and around the house. In skincare, Rose, Orange Blossom (Neroli) and Lavender hydrosols are great for hydrating dry skin and cooling hot and sensitised skin. If you have been out in the sun too long and got burned, Lavender hydrosol is soothing and comforting as well as healing. Used in the final rinse after shampooing hydrosols help to condition hair and add a shine.

We know of no better remedy for puffy, dark circles under the eyes than Chamomile hydrosol. Just soak two cotton wool pads with the hydrosol and cover each eye for around 10 minutes for an immediate and dramatic reduction in puffiness. Regular use can help diminish those dreaded dark circles too.

Perfect for summer

During the summer hydrosols are perfect to use as a cooling body mist, and the most cooling of all is Peppermint. Make sure you take some with you to use on holidays, on the beach and even to cool those aching tootsies when you are out shopping! Hydrosols help to revitalise you when your energies are beginning to flag, and a few sprays onto a tissue makes a handy wet-wipe for all sorts of applications including babies and grubby children.

To calm a restless baby try adding a few tablespoons of Lavender or Chamomile hydrosol into their bathwater. This can be especially beneficial if your baby is suffering from nappy rash or eczema, because the soothing properties of these hydrosols help calm the irritation and speed up the healing process.

Hydrosols are quite safe to use on young children, and since they only contain a small amount of essential oil they do not need diluting much further except as above when using with very young babies.

A green alternative

Hydrosols such as Rose can be added to the final rinse water in your washing cycle as well as used as a fragrant linen spray whilst ironing since they smell much nicer than their synthetic counterparts. Around the house, hydrosols are great to freshen the air instead of using aerosols which of course are harmful to the environment.

You can find a refreshing range of floral hydrosols at Soap Cafe. Choose your floral water:  Rose to soothe irritated skin, antiseptic Lavender or Chamomile to ease and calm the mind.  Email Charlene at info@soapcafemalta.com.

Ignorance is a choice - Knowledge is power!

And you thought ALL soap is the same… well, think again!!

Most  people think I make soap for fun...in reality there's more to it. I have come to realize  what a corrupt world we leave in... with cancers and new diseases cropping up every day...

I sit around pondering:  What is 'pissing the Gods off' so much that we deserve this...so I read, I research and have come to realize that no God created this...

WE created these problems...Stress, overload of chemicals, living on the fast lane and lack of quality time.

I'm no guru, and I'm not here to teach anything to anyone...but I enjoy the simple things in life and love sharing what I know. So if you would like to know more here's a few lines (more then few i guess! :P ) about why I do what I do.

  • Did you know that 60% of what we put on our skin goes into our blood stream? Whether good or bad, your little ‘insignificant’ daily washing routine can either be of benefit or pretty dangerous in the long run… it’s useless eating healthy when you’re loading your skin with toxic waste!

  • Is there the word ‘S.O.A.P’ written on your packaging of bar of soap/liquid soap? Probably NOT! Guess what..? Your nice fragrant white ‘soap’ with that little birdie on it is not actually soap but a detergent. The word ‘soap’ cannot be used on the product simply because it is NOT SOAP and thus it’s against the law to call it that!

  • Have you ever checked the ingredients? Mind boggling aren't they! Well, it doesn’t have to be that way… if a product is natural, then there shouldn’t be an unfathomable list written at the back of your product.

  • Did you know that REAL soap can take up to 6 weeks to be ready to sell?! And that is why your commercial, mass produced product can NEVER be truly natural… no large company that distributes its products worldwide will wait so long before they can sell it.

  • You love your pets don’t you?! Well, probably you are harming other animals without even knowing it!  Most commercial products are tested on animals… on their skins, their eyes their mouths. They are burned and disfigured and there are a precious few laws protecting them. commerical companies prefer animal testing because it’s cheaper than passing through expensive lab tests. At SoapCafe` we never test on animals. Our products pass through laborious lab tests and get certified without ever harming another being! In fact, most of our product are also VEGAN!.. And those which aren’t are still 100% vegetarian!

  • I don't mean to be a wet sock, but you’re not only depleting Marine Life but eating your detergent! Cleaning your clothes, your floors and even our bodies…you are using detergents with harsh chemicals which do not dissolve in water. That water goes into our drains and even after being treated, chemical residue persists and is not broken down. That drain water goes into our seas killing plant life, plankton and hence also fish. If that doesn't kill the fish, then it may end up into your plate.

Therefore, the commercial product you’re using today is probably going to end up in your stomach by the end of the week…  WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!

Bath Paints

This seemed like good clean fun!!! .Why not turn bath time into a fun, creative art time with bath paints? Here a little project for kids of all ages ;) Courtesy of Homemade Mamas Blog

This recipe cleaned up easily, but you might want to test it first on your grout.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup body wash
5 tablespoons cornstarch
food coloring

Mix the cornstarch with the soap. You may need to adjust the amount depending on your soap. Mix it in one tablespoon at a time. Divide mixture into smaller bowls. We used small containers with lids to save for future baths. Add a drop or two of food coloring to each bowl and stir.

Now it is time to paint...

Happiness is a Choice... So choose to be happy!

Our life is filled with up hills and maybe even more down hills. Most of us may not have had an easy life, but i think sometimes is our state of mind that determines the outcome of our short journey on earth...

The following words are some thoughts by Karl Ericson . I was very much moved by these thoughts. After all the best natural remedy of all for our mind, body and soul, is happiness...

Barry Kaufmann the founder of the Option Institute  and student of Bruce Marsico, the creator of the Option Method, has stated a fundamental and important secret of Happiness which is that "Happiness is a choice". In fact that is the title of one of his books. The reaction I would have had a while back to a statement like that would have been that it is nonsense. I would have said "I want to be happy and I'm not, so it is absurd to say that happiness is a choice. External tragic events can happen over which I have no control so happiness is not a choice.

In 100 A.D. Epictetus, a Greek Stoic philosopher once said

What disturbs people's minds
is not events
but their judgments on events.

More than 1800 years later this sentence is quoted by both rational emotive and cognitive therapists.   Throughout history this wisdom has been put forth by different people.  Marcus Aurelius said:
Life is
what your thoughts
make it.
Abraham Lincoln said:
A person
will be just about as happy
as they make up their minds
to be.

Charles Popplestone (whoever he was) said:
You cannot
always control circumstances,
but you can control
your own thoughts

We have some degree of control over our reaction to events and to that extent happiness is a choice.  The more we understand about happiness the more power we have to achieve it and the more it becomes a choice.

Often people do not choose happiness. That may sound strange, one would expect that everyone would choose to be happy if they were in the position to do so. If I am anxious to get something done quickly I sometimes tell myself that I have to hurry and things will be bad if I don't hurry and by doing so create anxiety within myself.  What I am doing is choosing to be nervous rather than happy in order to get something that I want. If I am worried about something happening e.g. losing a job, I might make myself more worried than I already am so that I will take action to prevent myself from losing the job.  In this case making myself afraid and unhappy is a defense mechanism against the threat of losing my job.  Likewise I disapprove of myself if I spend my time on enjoyable activities other than work.  This is another way to motivate myself to spend more time working.  My choice to disapprove of myself is a choice to be unhappy since that is the end result.  Of course if I lose my job because I didn't spend enough time on work I'd be unhappy as well but the point I'm making here is that for whatever reason, people sometimes choose to feel unhappy.  In addition to generating anxiety to motivate ourselves I sometimes don't want to be happy because I want to fight against a threat.  It might make me feel important to think I can do something against the threat of terrorism for example and that might be a reason I want to think about doing that instead of trying to be happy.
Not all emotions are by choice.  We may be naturally anxious about a situation.  We may be frustrated because things aren't going our way.  In these situations we can choose to try and not feel this way or to feel this way even more strongly.  Sometimes I dwell on things that I am upset about because I want to change them. Once I have made a plan of action to deal with the situation dwelling on the situation doesn't help and just generates unhappiness.  Yet sometimes I dwell on it anyway and so make myself unhappy.   We can call motivating oneself by creating unhappiness "negative self motivation".

Barry Kaufmann described negative self motivation beautifully in his book  To Love is to Be Happy With.  He wrote,
I realized how I had used myself against myself because of what I had believed.  I dreaded obesity and rejection in order to motivate myself to diet.   I feared lung cancer so that I could stop smoking.  I became anxious about unemployment as a way of pushing  myself to be more conscientious and to work harder.   I felt guilty to punish myself now in order to prevent myself from repeating a "bad" behavior in the future.  When I surveyed the environment, I saw people punish in order to prevent, fear death in order to live, hate war in order to stay in touch with their desire for peace.  Unhappiness was used as a motivator to help me take care of myself and to try to get more....All this so that eventually I would be happy or fulfilled.
