Easy Pomander Ball

Materials:
Netting or tulle
Cotton wool balls
Ribbon
Essential oils

Take your fabric and using a small saucer or plate cut out a circle. You can draw this onto your fabric and allow the students to cut the circle out. Pinking shears are much safer as it is hard to cut yourself.

Once the circle has been cut out take a cotton wool ball and pull it and tease it till it is a soft ball of fluff.

Then have your students choose an essential oil to place onto the cotton wool ball. You can have each student smell and tell you about each fragrance as they go.

Place a few drops of oil onto the cotton wool ball and place it into the centre of the fabric circle.

Pull the fabric up around the cotton wool and twist. Tie a ribbon around the top leaving a large loop for hanging.

If you are struggling holding it together then secure it with an elastic band to make it easier before tying the ribbon.

You can hang these anywhere.

Objective: This project is a great lesson plan for all ages and disabilities It allows the student to sense different smells and by using aromatherapy oils you can inflict moods onto your students such as lavender for relaxation, Orange for Uplifting.

Carob Tree

Carob (Pods) (Ceratonia siliqua) Maltese: Harrub

Carob is native to the eastern Mediterranean, probably the Middle East, where it has been in cultivation for at least 4000 years.

Capers

Caper (Capparis orientalis ) Maltese: Kappara

Caper bush is present in almost all the circum-Mediterranean countries and is included in the floristic composition of most of them but whether it is indigenous to this region is uncertain.

In Greek popular Medicine, a herbal tea made of caper root and young shoots is considered to be beneficial against rheumatism.

Caper root bark and leaves may have some anticarcinogenic activity. In fact, the hydrolysis products of indol-3-ylmethyl glucosinolates have anticarcinogenic effects. Although the consumption of capers is low in comparison with the intake of other major dietary sources of glucosinolates (white cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower) it may contribute to the daily dose of natural anticarcinogens that reduces cancer risk. Glucosinolates are also known to possess goitrogenic (anti-thyroid) activity. Also, rutin and quercetin may contribute to cancer prevention . Selenium, present in capers at high concentrations in comparison with other vegetable products, has also been associated with the prevention of some forms of cancer.

~Capers also have anti oxidant properties which improve the body’s immune system and delays the sign of aging.
~The spicy caper pickles traditionally added to recipes as appetite stimulant. Also, they help relieve stomach-ache and flatulence conditions.
~Fresh capers are also low in fat and calories and are a relatively good source of fiber and iron.
~Capers are good for people who suffer from mar disease

Caution should be used by those who have hypertension or heart disease. Capers are very high in sodium with over 250 mg. of sodium in a single tablespoon and should be eaten in moderation. Fortunately, their rather pungent, salty taste reduces the need for additional salt.

Borage

Borage (Borago officinalis) Maltese: Fidloqqom

Borage or Starflower, is an annual herb grown for its many culinary and medicinal uses as well as its surprisingly beautiful blue flowers. The flavor of Borage leaves is similar to cucumber and they are often used in salads and soups. Borage is native to Europe and the Mediterranean but has naturalized in North America.

It is used medicinally as an anti-inflammatory, for treating arthritis, as well as certain skin conditions (e.g. atopic dermatitis) and respiratory inflammation. It has one of the highest amounts of gamma-linolenic acid (omega-6) of seed oils - higher than black current seed oil or evening primrose, to which it is considered similar.

Other important compounds found in borage seed oil are vitamin C, tannin, saponins and certain minerals, all of which can play an important role in making the skin healthy and keeping skin problems like, acne at bay. The tannins present in the oil can tighten the skin. Borage oil can make the skin soft and supple by restoring the level of moisture. For this reason, this oil is quite beneficial to eliminate skin dryness. The gamma-linoleic acid found in borage oil can help to dilute sebum or oil, secreted by the sebaceous glands. Over secretion of sebum is the main factor that causes acne and pimples by clogging the skin pores. One can clear up such clogged skin pores by using borage oil for acne, and thus reduce the appearance of acne lesions.

Along with helping to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, borage oil can prove beneficial in conditions like, premenstrual syndrome, hot flashes, mood swings, breast tenderness, dry and damaged hair and hair loss. It can help to regulate the circulation of blood and facilitate the transmission of nerve impulses as well.

Facial Serum VS Facial Moisturizer

Are you finding it hard to decide what's better for your skin: a facial serum or a facial moisturizer? Here's what you need to know.

While facial serums can give you added moisture, the main reason you'd want to use a facial serum is to get added nutrients into deeper layers of your skin that a regular moisturizer is not able to reach. You can get many types of serums such as anti-aging serums, skin brightening serums and even acne preventative serums. You apply the serum after your toner and before your moisturizer.

A moisturizer has larger molecules than a serum. This means that a moisturizer will not penetrate the skin as far as a serum will. While serums deposit nutrients, moisturizers are meant to deposit moisture and hydration your skin.

Of course skin care companies would like to make you believe that you need both, but of course that is not true. If you have a problem with your skin that you'd like to improve, such as dark spots or early aging signs, a serum will most probably be the best choice . Also, if your skin is very oily, a serum can give you enough hydration, without being too 'oily'.

What is a pendulum?

Pendulums are made from a variety of materials including crystals, wood, glass, and metals. They are often used as tools for spiritual healing and inner growth.

DEALING WITH THE PENDULUM

The pendulum is basically an amplifier. It is a tool that helps you to access the collective unconscious and your Higher Self. You can get answers to anything you can come up with.

Every one is basically capable of working with the pendulum. Learning to work with it is like learning to play an instrument. It requires constant practice and experimentation Making mistakes is part of the learning process. The results you get will reflect your stage of spiritual/mental development.

You should not use the pendulum for egoistic reasons. Use it only for the well being of others or yourself.

REMEMBER: Swinging the pendulum requires that you be undivided and totally present in the moment.

SELECTING OR MAKING A PENDULUM

When selecting a pendulum follow your intuition and choose one that you like. You can make a pendulum yourself if you take a thread and hang a weigh on it which can be any object you like. The thread can be 15 to 20 cm long. Tie a knot in the thread at the length where the swing of the pendulum feels the best.

PROGRAMMING THE PENDULUM

You can ask about anything you like with the pendulum if the question can be answered with YES or NO. But first you have to determine what each pendulum movement means for you.

Take a seated position at a desk or table. Place you feet flat on the floor resting your elbow on the desk. Hold the pendulum by the end of chain between your thumb and index finger. Make sure that your upper body and back are straight, that the energy can flow freely. Put your other hand flat on the table. Relax. Let your breath flow calmly. Make sure before you start that you will be undistracted. Do not swing the pendulum when you are tired.

Hold your pendulum over the center of the illustration shown below and you ask: “What does a YES look like?” than “What does a NO look like?”

The pendulum can turn in the following directions: up-down, left-right or in a circle.

Practice several times a day for at least a week. Once you have determined your YES and NO do not deviate from it. When you programmed your pendulum test it. Prove to yourself that it really works. Ask questions you already know the answer. Otherwise always assume an unattached and unbiased attitude.

When you have determined a clear Yes and No, ask your pendulum how it swings for “I do not want to answer” or “I can not answer that.”

REMEMBER: a correct answer will follow only when the question is asked in the right way.

OTHER WAYS TO USE THE PENDULUM

You can place your pendulum directly over an object and test it. You may want to test your water, groceries, medications, gemstones, flower remedies, determine what therapies are good for you by writing down the name of couple of them. You can test the energy of your house, evaluate your sleeping space, and more.

Natural Sponges VS Synthetic Sponges

You may be asking yourself the same questions I was; what are the major differences in natural sponges vs. synthetic sponges, and why should I use a natural sea sponge?

~They are much more durable and retain more water than a synthetic sponge. A sea wool sponge taken care of properly can last as long as 10 years and a yellow sponge as long as 4 years!

~Natural sea sponges actually have enzymes in them that inhibit the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria. (So no more green, 'yucky' moldy sponges! )

~There are no harmful chemicals in natural sea sponges. It is all natural and safe to use on all skin; young, old, sensitive, rough, and also safe to use for general cleaning around the house.

~And if you have very sensitive skin or are just looking for something very mild to wash your child, infant our yourself with, I think there is no better combo than an unscented goats milk soap bar molded in a natural sea wool sponge, one of the most softest sponges and highly recommended for bathing babies.

So for a chemical free bath and soft skin opt for natural sea sponge. Makr sure though, that it is ETHICALLY sourced from sustainable reefs.

Salt Crystal Deodorant - YES IT WORKS

Unlike the leading brands sold in drugstores, crystal deodorant is:

~Completely natural, made of mineral salts
~Free of alcohol, aluminum compounds, SLS, and other synthetic chemicals
~A solid, non-sticky and non-staining
~Hypoallergenic
~Fragrance free
~Not absorbed by the skin, preventing toxins from accumulating
~Allows the body to sweat out normal toxins, a healthy and necessary process
~Moreover, IT really WORKS! ...(and looks so much prettier that the plastic bottled stuff :p)

How Does Crystal Deodorant Work?
Body odor is caused not just by sweat, but from the by-products of bacteria that live on moist, sweaty areas of the skin. Most deodorants try to overpower body odor, while antiperspirants stop the body from sweating using alcohol or aluminum compound that shrink the pores of the skin.
Sweat is a natural, necessary way for the body to cool itself and release toxins. Salt crystals eliminate odor not by stopping sweat, but by preventing the bacteria that create bad smells from getting a foothold on your skin.

Salt rock crystal deodorants are safe, even for people with allergies and skin sensitivity, and they do not leave behind any noticeable residue on skin or clothing. Though there are several brands available, the only thing to really watch for is that you're choosing a pure salt crystal with no additives or fragrance.

The Benefits of REAL soap...

Unlike most commercial soaps, handmade soaps often contain carrier and essential oils as the main ingredients. It is through manipulation of these natural ingredients that soap makers are able to create the beneficial, medicinal properties.

The healing properties are not limited to those possessed by carrier and essential oils. Other ingredients can be added to your soap to increase its therapeutic nature. These ingredients include oatmeal, herbs, herb-infused water, butters such as cocoa and Shea, as well as clays!

Specific Ailments Natural Soap Can Treat
Here is an incomplete list of ailments natural soap can treat if it contains the proper ingredients.

* Acne
* Eczema
* Psoriasis
* Ringworm and Other Fungal Infections
* Oily Skin
* Dry Skin
* Infected Cuts and Abrasions

Your soap’s ability to heal is limited only by your knowledge of the power held in natural ingredients. Far too often, we forsake the ancient natural remedies of old for modern solutions. Ironically, it is the natural remedy that is usually more effective and safer than the chemicals we use today.

'Good' Energy Lamps

Himalayan Crystal Salt Lamps are believed to create negatively charged ions in the air. This is a good thing because modern day pollution and electrical equipment creates positive ions in the air which are potentially harmful to us and cause air quality in areas affected to deteriorate. By using a Himalayan Crystal Salt Lamp you replace the negatively charged ions in the air which helps us to avoid the alleged physical and mental harm that the ‘electric smog’ creates.

Other sources of negatively charged ions include waterfalls and the sea, with up to 10,000 negative ions per cubic metre apposed to just 100 negative ions per cubic metre in the city at rush hour.

• Hazardous substances are commonly used in processing textiles. These chemicals can leach out of the products over time and get into our bodies. (source: Greenpeace page 20)

• Conventional cotton uses 24% of all insecticide and 11% of all pesticides used in the world each year!

• Organic cotton is a clean, sustainable alternative to conventional cotton and is a much purer fiber to put next to your skin.

• Organic Cotton is naturally waxy, so the towels will need a few washes to reach maximum absorbency

Ecru is unbleached organic cotton in it’s natural colour

Treat yourself to soft and snugly organic cotton towels…

N.B: These towels wash beautifully, but make sure you DON’T use fabric softener, it reduces absorbency

Why hand washing is so important!

You've probably been told to wash your hands since you were a kid: before you eat, after you use the restroom, when you're sick. It's such a simple, well-known and effective way to prevent the spread of germs.

So why are we writing about something you already do?
Because hand washing with safer soaps can reduce toxic exposures, too!

Hand washing is an effective -- but often overlooked -- way to reduce our exposures to toxic chemicals. Chemicals can migrate onto our hands from the many toxic products we use everyday -- and the simple act of washing our hands can help reduce our exposure. This is especially important for young children, whose hands are so frequently in their mouths.

Choose a safer soap.
Ironically, some soaps contain chemicals you should avoid (like triclosan, mostly found in anti-bacterial soap!!). Choosing a safer soap is an important part of reducing your toxic exposures.

(Check out the article regarding anti bacterial soap in the 'facts' section)

7 healthy reasons why to enjoy chocolate without guilt!!

(From an article on the Huffington Post)

1. High in antioxidants:Chocolate is high in flavonoids, an antioxidant in the polyphenol category. Antioxidants can help to prevent cell damage and have been linked to prevention of cancer and other degenerative diseases.

2. Helps with cholesterol: Scientists at Penn State found that dark chocolate and flavonoid-rich cocoa powder reduced LDL ("bad" cholesterol) oxidation.

3. Reduces inflammation: An Italian studyshowed that when volunteers ingested small amounts of dark chocolate,their levels of C-reactive protein (an inflammatory marker) decreased.

4. Lowers blood pressure: A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that dark chocolate had an effect on lowering blood pressure.

5. Helps with mood: Chocolate contains tryptophan,a precursor of serotonin, which can help with depression. Research also shows chocolate can increase dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure. Chocolate also contains phenylethylamine (PEA) known as the "love chemical."

6. Improves blood flow: Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that cocoa has anti-clotting, blood-thinning properties that work in as similar way as aspirin. Nobody is suggesting to replace your aspirin with chocolate, but the research is compelling.

7. It's delicious! Research shows that enjoying food and life is beneficial for your health.

Most studies were done using cocoa powder or dark chocolate. Experts suggest that adding small amounts(a one ounce piece a few times a week) of dark chocolate to a healthy diet that includes antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables will give you a variety of phytochemicals (beneficial elements of plants) that have proven health benefits.
